of the sea lions' regret -- sul rammarico delle foche

It seems that there is no cure for the expat condition

Symptoms include unresolved questions regarding the expat wives’ perceived sense of subordination, their supposed loss of identity and the resentment that brews within the couple and approaches its boiling point as more and more relocations are added to the recipe.
So I often get asked questions centred on this sense of loss: what did you miss the most? What do you regret the most?
The missing part is easy, MY FAMILY I will invariably blurt out. I am from Italy, remember? The mafia is clearly a twisted aberration, but still, la famiglia is la famiglia.

The regret questions had me thinking though. To get out of the murky waters of couple-counseling-like answers (some good husband-bashing is always a favorite topic of conversation among expats) I have identified two main regrets:
Regret number 1: not having done enough voluntary work.

After all, at least before TGG and TGT arrived, I had time, we lived in Asia and in Central America and so why didn’t I get more involved with an orphanage or something?
The answer my friends, resides once again in the peculiarity of the expat condition, namely in the extra effort that expats need to function normally outside of their comfort zone.
Yes we buy groceries and figure out the currency and traffic rules and make friends and find doctors and pay the bills and so on.
But everything is OTHER and this constant friction against the element of OTHER is very energy-consuming.
Like sea lions on dry land
Sure they can survive, but they move clumsily, they are slower, more vulnerable, make funny sounds (that’s the expats trying to use the local language), but they are very clearly outside of their element.

Of course I am keeping regret number 2 for tomorrow, how in the world am I supposed to write a post a day if I give away all the juicy details at once?

This one-post-a-day thing is actually quite easy. Break down a longer post and voilà.

-------------------------------------------------
