of the uplifting power of books -- sul potere dei libri di elevare


So I have come across the blog of this lovely and very smart girl (she likes the stuff I write) and it turns out that she has three kids and reads on average one book per week.
Which immediately made me think fondly of all the books I also picked up when my own kids were small.

To stick under one of the table’s legs if they weren’t even, or to hold the window open and prevent it from banging.
To use as pot holder if I couldn't find one, or swat the occasional spider on the wall.

Or in case of my massive Latin and Greek dictionaries, I fondly used them as steps whenever I needed to reach something on an upper shelf.
(They are actually the ones that fondly ended up on an upper shelf the moment I graduated, never to be seen again

Allora mi sono imbattuta nel blog di questa ragazza intelligentissima (le piace la roba che scrivo) e ho scoperto che ha tre bambini e legge in media un libro alla settimana.
Il che mi ha fatto subito ripensare con affetto a tutti i libri che anch’io ho preso in mano quando i miei bimbi erano piccoli.

Per livellare una gamba del tavolo se ballava o tenere la finestra aperta senza che sbattesse.
Se non trovavo un sottopentola o per schiacciare qualche povero ragno sul muro.

O nel caso dei miei giganteschi vocabolari di latino e greco, per usarli amovevolmente come sgabello se dovevo raggiungere uno scaffale in alto.
In realtà sono loro ad essere finiti su uno scaffale in alto a casa dei miei il giorno dopo la maturità, in modo da non doverli amorevolmente rivedere mai più
