of students' demonstrations -- sulle dimostrazioni studentesche

So whenever there are students' protests in the news, my kids are fascinated by the motives and implications of why people who are just a bit older than them would go out on the streets and make such a racket.

I'd like to quote two wise men.

One is my Dad, who said: "if it means skipping a few days of school, kids would protest even the length of French fries. And it's true, French fries are way too short. "

And the other is Bill Clinton, who after been throw eggs at, cooly wiped his jacket and said: " It's good for young people to be mad at somebody". And it's true, the status quo needs to be challenged when it fosters injustice.

Of course I'd like to enhance my coolness factor in the eyes of my kids, but the truth is that I never took part in any revolutionary demonstration. That's because when I was a student, although chanting and spray-panting seemed like much more fun than sitting in class and studying, I knew that my parents were hard at work, they were those who do, and I didn't want to disrespect them by being one of those who undo.

Damn sense of duty.

Anyway, when I watch those university demonstrations on youtube, I often look at those kids thinking that just a few years ago they were playing with Barbie, they cannot probably even keep their own bedroom tidy, and yet they think they know how to change the world.

It's kind of cute.

One thing I've heard them say several times when confronted by someone with a different opinion is: "Shut up, you should listen more, that's why you have two ears and just one mouth". SNAP!

So cute.

But unfortunately our sensory organs are not a symbolic representation of human interactions.

No.

If they had paid attention in science class, they would remember that we have two ears (and two eyes) so that we can not only hear and see approaching predators, but estimate their distance and speed as well.

It's survival, not sociology.

And it's because people sat in class and studied instead of chanting and spray-painting that we do not have to watch out for wild animals anymore. (Other than the occasional pitbull).

Those who do and those who undo.

----------------------------

No.
